Most of this change is to boilerplate commentary such as license URLs.
This change was prompted by ftp://ftp.gnu.org's going-away party,
planned for November. Change these FTP URLs to https://ftp.gnu.org
instead. Make similar changes for URLs to other organizations moving
away from FTP. Also, change HTTP to HTTPS for URLs to gnu.org and
fsf.org when this works, as this will further help defend against
man-in-the-middle attacks (for this part I omitted the MS-DOS and
MS-Windows sources and the test tarballs to keep the workload down).
HTTPS is not fully working to lists.gnu.org so I left those URLs alone
for now.
Work around Bug#22884 by rewording comments and strings to avoid ‘(’
at the start of a line unless it starts a function. This change
is a short-term hack; in the longer run we plan to fix cc-mode’s
performance for C files that have ‘(’ at the start of a line in a
comment or string.
This fixes the smaller performance hit that I noted in:

* src/alloc.c (macro_XPNTR_OR_SYMBOL_OFFSET, macro_XPNTR):
* src/puresize.h (puresize_h_PURE_P)
(puresize_h_CHECK_IMPURE):
New macros, with the old contents of the functions.
* src/alloc.c (XPNTR_OR_SYMBOL_OFFSET, XPNTR):
* src/puresize.h (PURE_P, CHECK_IMPURE):
Use the new macros. Also macros, if DEFINE_KEY_OPS_AS_MACROS.
* src/conf_post.h (ATTRIBUTE_UNUSED):
* src/lisp.h (DEFINE_KEY_OPS_AS_MACROS): New macros.
Redo src/*.h so that each include file is idempotent (that is, can
be included multiple times with the latter inclusions having no
effect) and standalone (that is, can be included by itself,
with no include file other than config.h needed as a prerequisite).
This is standard practice in GNU programs nowadays.

* src/intervals.c (create_root_interval):
Do CHECK_IMPURE only for strings; not needed for buffers.
Prefer ! STRINGP to BUFFERP, for a tad more speed.
* src/puresize.h (CHECK_IMPURE, PURE_P):
Now inline functions instead of macros.
(PURE_P): Don’t use XPNTR; that is now the caller’s responsibility.
All callers changed.
(CHECK_IMPURE): New argument PTR, to save us the work of running XPNTR.
All callers changed.
* lisp/loadup.el (purify-flag): Pre-grow the hash-table to reduce the

All uses removed.

(BITS_PER_CHAR, BITS_PER_SHORT, BITS_PER_INT, BITS_PER_LONG):
Move to src/lisp.h.
(EMACS_INT_MAX): New macro.
This directory predates autoconf and is no longer needed nowadays.
Move its few remaining bits of functionality to where they're needed.

* src/lisp.h (EMACS_INT_MAX): New macro, useful in #if.
(EMACS_UINT): Define unconditionally now.
(BITS_PER_CHAR, BITS_PER_SHORT, BITS_PER_INT, BITS_PER_LONG)
(BITS_PER_EMACS_INT): New constants, replacing
what used to be in config.h, but not useful in #if.
(GCTYPEBITS, VALBITS): Define unconditionally, since m/* files don't
define them any more.
(VAL_MAX): New macro.
(VALMASK): Use it.

Move here from removed file m/intel386.h.
* src/s/gnu.h (NLIST_STRUCT): Remove undef; 'configure' does this.
* src/s/irix6-5.h (_LP64): Remove; lisp.h no longer needs this.
does not work on some platforms. Problem reported by Andreas Schwab in
<http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/emacs-devel/2011-11/msg00081.html>.
* puresize.h (pure, PURE_P): Always behave as if VIRT_ADDR_VARIES
is set, removing the need for VIRT_ADDRESS_VARIES.
(PURE_P): Use a more-efficient implementation that needs just one
comparison, not two: on x86-64 with GCC 4.6.2, this cut down the
number of instructions from 6 (xorl, cmpq, jge, xorl, cmpq, setge)
to 4 (xorl, subq, cmpq, setbe).
* alloc.c (pure): Always extern now, since that's the
VIRT_ADDR_VARIES behavior.
(PURE_POINTER_P): Use a single comparison, not two, for
consistency with the new puresize.h.
* lisp.h (PNTR_COMPARISON_TYPE): Remove; no longer needed.
* m/ibms390.h, m/intel386.h, m/template.h, s/cygwin.h, s/hpux10-20.h:
Remove VIRT_ADDR_VARIES no longer needed.
* Makefile.in (OTHER_FILES): Define using autoconf, not cpp.
(OBJECTS_MACHINE): Remove, unused.
* configure.in (OTHER_FILES): Define using autoconf not cpp.
