This is necessary to correctly read keys like 'M-~'
used by 'save-some-buffers' that is two keys 'ESC ~'
on a tty.
* doc/lispref/minibuf.texi (Multiple Queries):
Index 'y-or-n-p-use-read-key' for 'map-y-or-n-p'.
Mention using a key sequence instead of single keys.
* lisp/emacs-lisp/map-ynp.el (map-y-or-n-p):
In the 'y-or-n-p-use-read-key' cond-branch,
use 'read-key-sequence-vector' instead of 'read-key'.
In the default cond-branch, use 'this-command-keys-vector'
instead of 'last-command-event'. In both cond-branches
use 'key-description' instead of 'single-key-description'
(bug#81168).
Instead of '(eq def nil)' check if chars are either nil
or an empty vector in noninteractive mode (bug#67836).
* test/lisp/emacs-lisp/map-ynp-tests.el (test-map-ynp-kmacro):
Test separately nil/non-nil 'y-or-n-p-use-read-key'.
(test-map-ynp-keys): New test for complete coverage of
'map-y-or-n-p'.
* lisp/emacs-lisp/map-ynp.el (map-y-or-n-p): Use the 'read-key'
branch only when the variable 'y-or-n-p-use-read-key' is non-nil.
Add a new cond-branch to read from the minibuffer.
Add a special case when def is nil in a kmacro in batch mode (bug#67836).
* test/lisp/files-tests.el (files-tests--with-buffer-offer-save):
Let-bind 'y-or-n-p-use-read-key' to t.
* lisp/emacs-lisp/map-ynp.el (map-y-or-n-p): Bind
overriding-text-conversion-style to nil around read-event and
arrange that the input method be reset.
Previously, if map-y-or-n-p got -1 from read-event (indicating no
input due to the end of a keyboard macro), it would just infinite
loop.
Now it behaves like other commands which use read-event/read-char/etc,
and just errors when we try to look up -1 in our keymap and find
nothing.
Also, just for the sake of users, print a slightly prettier message
when this happens.
* lisp/emacs-lisp/map-ynp.el (map-y-or-n-p): Don't loop if we reach
the end of a keyboard macro. (Bug#67046)
* lisp/emacs-lisp/map-ynp.el (map-y-or-n-p): Doc fix. (Bug#47833)
* doc/lispref/minibuf.texi (Multiple Queries): Fix the wording in
the description of 'map-y-or-n-p'.
This reverts the last change that replaced [remap self-insert-command]
with [t]. The user should have freedom of using any command
in the minibuffer. (bug#32738)
Treat SHORT-ANSWER as a character is characterp returns non-nil.
Otherwise, use key-description to print it.
Use catch-all [t] in keymap instead of [remap self-insert-command].
(bug#32738)
* lisp/simple.el (read-char-history):
Rename from read-char-from-minibuffer-history. (Bug#38076)
(read-char-from-minibuffer-insert-char):
Rename from read-char-from-minibuffer-self-insert.
(read-char-from-minibuffer-map-hash): New defconst.
(read-char-from-minibuffer-insert-other): New command.
(read-char-from-minibuffer): Add optional args CHARS and HISTORY.
(zap-to-char): Use 'read-char-history as HISTORY arg of
read-char-from-minibuffer.
* lisp/emacs-lisp/map-ynp.el (read-answer): Use sit-for instead of sleep-for.
Replace short answer history yes-or-no-p-history with read-char-history.
Restore lines saying "Maintainer: emacs-devel@gnu.org" when there is
no special maintainer for a file. Although this wasn't documented
it was common practice and removing the lines didn't have consensus.

Most of this change is to boilerplate commentary such as license URLs.
This change was prompted by ftp://ftp.gnu.org's going-away party,
planned for November. Change these FTP URLs to https://ftp.gnu.org
instead. Make similar changes for URLs to other organizations moving
away from FTP. Also, change HTTP to HTTPS for URLs to gnu.org and
fsf.org when this works, as this will further help defend against
man-in-the-middle attacks (for this part I omitted the MS-DOS and
MS-Windows sources and the test tarballs to keep the workload down).
HTTPS is not fully working to lists.gnu.org so I left those URLs alone
for now.
